JOB TITLE System Administrator
REPORTS TO: Manager, Strategic Systems Devolpment




The System Administrator administers the organization’s production, test, and development IBM Power and IBM i systems computing environment, VIOS, vHMC, and V7000 SAN environments. Ensures that the system resources necessary to support the company’s information technology needs are available, appropriately implemented, operated and/or supported. Responsible for the implementation of installed IBM mid-range hardware and software for lottery back-office systems. Monitors systems for operational efficiency. Responsible for keeping critical system databases synchronized to ensure Disaster Recovery preparedness. Assists with and supplements user and operational duties and issues, as directed.  Works under general supervision and guidance.




  • Administration of all KLC’s development, QA, test, and production Power systems. 
  • Monitors/fine tunes systems for adequacy, operational efficiency, and optimum performance, including software fixes, updates, modifications, PTFs, and services packs. 
  • Ensures that the KLC systems are functioning at their optimum levels.
  • Maintains dialogue with Information Technology and Information Security staff regarding current and future alterations to the technical environment.
  • Documents all changes to systems by maintaining accurate logs of all system changes. 
  • Responsible for system integrity and synchronization for the IBM i partitions and nodes.
  • Responsible for QA and development environment restorations.
  • Responsible for the installation and configurations of all IBM i partitions.
  • Works with IT staff to schedule system and software implementations to meet departmental timeliness.  
  • Works jointly with the Information Security Office to ensure that security is implemented and enforced consistent with ISO standards.
  • Provides 24/7 troubleshooting support, as on-call and support personnel, for KLC’s IBM i partitions.
  • Liaison with IBM for system support issues.
  • Works on project teams to provide tactical and strategic input on the future direction, planning and design of IBM i partition enhancements.
  • Researches, evaluates, and makes recommendations to management as to the hardware and/or software solutions that best meets the corporation’s strategic initiatives. 
  • Aids with operational duties, such as job processing, profiles resets and user assistance and training.
  • Assumes duties of ITIL Change Manager (leading change control meetings, entering and managing change requests), and the change liaison with certain technology vendors.
  • Performs various duties as assigned by manager. This includes training as relates to the job responsibilities.




  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related field is desired. Will consider experience as a substitute in the absence of a degree.


Incumbent should possess a minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience including:


Technical Experience


  • Knowledge of the Information Technology field and computer systems.
  • Knowledge of the IBM’s Power System hardware and associated operating systems (IBM I, AIX, VIOS), including configuration, managing access and emulation software services.
  • Understanding of External Storage Area Network (SAN) systems, including configuring and managing storage systems specific to Power nodes.
  • Understanding of IBM HMC (Hardware Management Console).
  • Understanding of Virtualized Computing environments (Networking and Data Storage).
  • Understanding of DDM (Distributed Data Management) concepts.
  • Understanding of TCP/IP Networking Protocol.
  • Intermediate PC and networking skills.
  • Understanding and working knowledge of a multiple system environment with hardware and software replication.
  • Intermediate knowledge of hardware peripheral configurations and operations (tape drives, printers, etc.)
  • Understanding of installation, upgrading, and troubleshooting operating system and 3rd party software packages.
  • Understanding of IBM i Security Concepts.
  • Additional knowledge a plus - WebSphere, Rational Team Concert, SQL, Backup/Recovery Media Services (BRMS) software, IBM i data replication software applications (Mimix), CL Programming.

  • Must be willing to participate in a rotation of weekend and holiday systems monitoring.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, be willing to drive company vehicles and travel to various lottery locations, as needed.




This position has no supervisory responsibilities.




  • Office and remote, working from home environment.
  • Travel – Some travel may be required.
