Louisville man gets his first big Kentucky Lottery win, cashing in a $50,000 prize.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said on Saturday he was at the Thorntons on Shelbyville Road in Louisville when he decided to purchase a Kentucky Lottery Scratch-off ticket.

“I’m a contractor, so sometimes people give me tips,” he said.

He told lottery officials that when he gets extra money, sometimes he likes to buy Scratch-off tickets.

He initially bought one $20 Sratch-off ticket and one $5 Scratch-off ticket, winning a total of $205 on both tickets. He figured he would take his chances and go back in to purchase another ticket. The ticket of choice ended up being the $50 Millionaire Club Scratch-off.

He scratched the ticket off at home and that’s when he found out it was a winner.  He had revealed the “gold bar” symbol, winning the game’s $50,000 prize.

“My fiancé was sleeping, and I wanted to wake her so bad,” he said.

Excited, the man said he woke up the next morning earlier than usual and made his coffee.

“I never get up that early,” he said.  “(My fiancé) came in and said, ‘What are you doing? Something is up.’”  He told her she might want to make some coffee too before telling her about his win.

“She thought it was one of those prank tickets,” he told officials.  “She still doesn’t believe me.”

The man said his fiancé texted him as he made his way to the Kentucky Lottery headquarters on Monday afternoon, waiting to be told it was a prank.

Instead, the Louisville man went home with a check for $36,000 after taxes. He said he plans to do some house repairs and will try to save the rest.

Thorntons will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.
