For games with a top prize which offer an option to claim the prize as an annuity payment or to take a lump sum cash option, the lottery collects a certain percentage of ticket sales equal to the present cash value of the annuitized top prize. The cash option is the amount of money the Lottery would have to invest in the current money market in order for that money to grow to the advertised annuitized prize amount over the specified annuity period. For some prizes, the annuity period is 20 years and for others it is 30 years, as set forth in the applicable game Rules and Regulations. When claiming prizes for games with an annuitized top prize, players can choose either the full annuity option or the cash option.
For certain multi-state games (e.g., Powerball and Mega Millions), players have 60 days to elect whether to receive the cash option or the annuity option. After 60 days have passed and no election is made, the payment automatically becomes an annuity. For prize and claim information regarding a specific game, refer to the Game Rules and Regulations here.
Under Kentucky Law, should you become deceased, the annuity prize remaining shall be paid to the winner's estate or directed by a court order. KRS 154A.110.

Kentucky specific draw games, like Pick 3, Pick 4, Kentucky Cash Ball, Keno, and Cash Pop are drawn using a digital drawing system utilizing a random number generator (RNG), instead of using balls and machines. Using the RNG accomplishes the drawings quickly and more efficiently while maintaining the highest level of security.
The digital drawing system is not connected to any external system and contains no ability to connect to the internet. The device is locked into a full-sized chassis, and tampering is prevented with a bar-coded security bolt that has to be destroyed to be removed. Detailed written procedures require two people to be present at all times in order to access the system, containing a number of checks which must be verified by both individuals before a drawing can be conducted.
The digital drawing systems are housed in the dedicated draw studio with extensive electronic and video surveillance located at the Kentucky Lottery headquarters building in Louisville.
Kentucky has been using RNGs for more than 10 years, first with 5 Card Cash, a game that has since ended, and moved to using RNGs for all Kentucky specific games in 2020. At least 43 state lotteries in the U.S. use some form of a random number generator for their lottery drawings.
Powerball, Mega Millions and Lucky for Life are drawn live, and can be viewed from our website under https://www.kylottery.com/apps/draw_games/watchTheDrawings.html.
Every set of numbers, whether selected by a player or Quick Pick, has an equal chance of winning.
For every Scratch-off ticket sold by the Kentucky Lottery, there is a certain number of tickets printed. Within that entire print run, there are a certain number of winning tickets printed. The overall odds are determined by dividing the total number of tickets printed for a game divided by the number of winning tickets printed. For instance, if there are 400,000 winning tickets for a game and there are 1.4 million total tickets printed, the odds are: 1.4 million/400,000 = 1: 3.5. So, on average (for this example), the odds of winning are 1 in every 3.5 tickets. That doesn't mean that every 1 out of every 3 or 4 tickets purchased in succession will be a winner. It means that out of all the tickets printed, the average number of winners will come out to 1 in 3.5. In some cases, there will be a number of winning tickets in a row and, in other cases, there may be a number of tickets in succession without a winner. Prizes and odds for all Scratch-off games are set forth in the Game Rules and Regulations found at here.
You can find a retailer and check winning numbers without having a Fun Club account. If you want to scan a ticket or play a lottery game via the app, you will need to have a Fun Club account and meet the criteria for purchasing Kentucky Lottery tickets online.
