Louisville plumber Donald Dalton started his day expecting clogged drains, not life-changing news. But a quick stop at a Kentucky Lottery retailer delivered a holiday surprise he and his family – including 13 grandchildren – will never forget.
On his way to a plumbing job, Dalton visited Caps Food Mart & Deli to cash in a small winner and picked up two more scratch-off tickets – a $5 ticket and a $10 ticket.
The $5 Cash Overload ticket would change his day and his plans for the upcoming holiday.
“I hit all the numbers. It showed $5,000 on the next nine of them,” Dalton told Lottery officials. “I went right back to the shop and told them to give someone else the plumbing job,” he laughed.
The excitement quickly spread. Dalton showed the winning ticket to his wife, who works in the office. “She about started bawling,” he said.
“It’s great, being so close to Christmas. We’ve got 13 grandkids,” said the proud grandfather, who took home $36,250 after taxes.
Caps Food Mart & Deli will receive $500 for selling the winning ticket. There are three top prizes of $50,000 and more than 7,000 second-tier prizes of $500 remaining on the game.
