Darryl Board recently had his name drawn from over 71,000 entries for the lottery’s Kentucky Bourbon Trail® retailer second-chance promotion that won him a Kentucky distillery tour package for two worth $1,219, a $10,000 cash prize and a bourbon-inspired gift basket valued at $150 for a grand prize value of $11,369.
Board had been traveling back and forth to Kentucky from Alabama in recent months to help take care of his ailing sister. After her passing, Board came back to Smiths Grove, Kentucky where his sister lived to handle funeral arrangements.
Board would stop at a local Marathon station to purchase the $5 Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Scratch-off tickets.
“I think I bought six or seven of those tickets,” Board said. “I won on a couple but entered the rest. I entered the tickets and didn’t think anything else about it.”
In early April, the Kentucky Lottery and the Kentucky Distillers’ Association rolled out its Kentucky Bourbon Trail® lottery games as part of a partnership. The games include a $5 Scratch-off ticket; a $5 Fast Play ticket; and an Instant Play (online) game. These games offered second chance promotions.
Board told lottery officials he was having lunch at a Raising Cane’s with his daughter when he got the call telling him he had won. “She started laughing and asked me, ‘Why are you crying?’ I never expected to hit that day. I was blown away.”
“I said, ‘Oh lord!’ It was a complete surprise and brought something good to my life,” he said. “I thought, ‘okay, she (sister) must be looking down on me.”
The Kentucky Lottery is highlighting Board’s win during National Bourbon Week.
Board said he looks forward to coming back to Kentucky for something fun and experience the bourbon distillery tours.
The $5 Kentucky Bourbon Trail® Scratch-off game has one $75,000 top-tier prize and 23 $750 prizes remaining. There are 37 $500 prizes still available on the game.
