Vicky Barnes and her husband Jamie, of Shepherdsville, Ky, showed up at Kentucky Lottery headquarters recently holding a winning Scratch-off ticket worth $150,000.
Vicky purchased the $10 King Crossword Scratch-off ticket at the Bullitt County Supermarket on Clermont Road in Shepherdsville.
It wasn’t until the following week, Tax Day, that Vicky scratched the ticket off, while at her kitchen counter.
“I scratched the first bonus off first and it said, ‘$75,000,’” Vicky said. I called him, (Jamie), at work immediately. “I’m like, I’ve won like really big on the lottery. While I was talking to him, I scratched off the second bonus. Holy crap, I just won another $60,000!”
Her husband thought she was reading the ticket wrong. “Are you sure,” he asked repeatedly.
In the meantime, she texted him a picture of the ticket. “I read the instructions and saw the max prize was one fifty,” Jamie said. “I texted her back and told her, ‘I don’t think you won one thirty-five. You’re going to win one fifty or you’ve read it wrong and didn’t win anything.”
“I thought I had won $135,000,” Vicky said, but realized she hadn’t scratched the rest of the ticket. Vicky eventually revealed 12 words to win the game’s $150,000 top prize.
“It took her an hour for her to scratch it off,” Jamie said. Vicky told lottery officials she likes to play the Crossword tickets because of the extended play. “I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth since it takes a while to scratch them off.”
Jamie got home from work and scanned the ticket using his phone to confirm the win. “When I scanned it, and it said it, I knew it was real,” Jamie said.
“I was confident that ticket was a winner but I’m still not sure it’s totally hit me yet,” Vicky told officials.
Vicky and Jamie drove to lottery headquarters on April 21st where they walked away with a check for $108,000 after taxes.
“It makes life easier,” Jamie said. The couple said they plan to buy a car and put some winnings towards remodeling their home.
Bullitt County Supermarket will receive $1,500 for selling the winning ticket.
The King Crossword game went on sale to players in February. This win makes it the first $150,000 prize to claimed on this game. There is still one $150,000 top prize and eleven $1,500 prizes remaining on the game. Thirteen winners have been awarded the $1,500 prize.
