Jack Thomas, of Vanceburg, KY is $50,000 richer after he received an unexpected call.

Thomas plays Powerball regularly and his Quick Pick numbers from the February 28th drawing matched the five white balls but not the Powerball to win the game’s third prize of $50,000.  His ticket also matched the Powerball on another set of numbers, winning an additional $4.

“I didn’t know I won until the store called me,” he said. “They said, ‘You won some money,’ but didn’t say how much until I came up there.”

Thomas told his wife, but she didn’t believe him.

“She didn’t believe me for a good hour,” Thomas said. “It wasn’t until my grandson said he’d heard I won $50,000. Then she said, ‘You weren’t fibbing me!’”

The Lewis County man and one of his grandson’s drove to lottery headquarters on March 5th to collect his winnings and walked away with a check for $36,002.88 after taxes.

Thomas told lottery officials that he had recently bought a farm and plans to use the money towards paying for that.

Riverbend Pub & Grill, where the winning was sold, will receive $500 for selling the ticket.
